Sorry but I am not taking any more mystery pots at the moment
From Olwen: An unusual jug with a mark that resembles a fir tree. |
Mark Nuttall - think your Jug is Alan Gaff of the Appin pottery who as Far as I am aware sadly no longer with us Pat - This mark is not in my book for Alan Gaff. Trevor - Hi Folks...just received a strange email asking for money with Mike's email address and sent to multiple recipients. I've tried to contact Mike via the contact link but it is temporarily suspended...it looks like his email account has been hijacked!!! Anyone know how to contact him?
Can you imagine, I made a quick trip to Madrid,Spain and was robbed. My bag, valuables, credit cards and passport were stolen. The embassy has cooperated by issuing a temporary passport.I need funds to settle outstanding hotel bills, ticket and other expenses.
To be honest,i don't have money with me at the moment. I've made contact with my bank but the best they could do was to send me a new card in the mail which will take 2-4 working days to arrive. I need you to lend me some Money to sort my self out of this predicament, i will pay back once i get this over with because i need to make a last minute flight.
Western Union or MoneyGram is the fastest option to wire funds to me. Let me know if you need my details(Full names/location) to effect a transfer.
Many cheers,
Mike
Trevor - Has anyone else received this email? michael - I recieved the same email and also found it odd. Wendy - I got the same message and found someone with Mike's phone number to alert him that his email contacts had been harvested. I hope to God no-one fell for it or even answered the email
Trevor - I expect the person(s) doing this have their own twisted reasons and I expect the 'problem' will disappear just as quickly ;-)
mark - hi I got the email sorry ignored it as it was so strange Pat Walton - I too received e-mail and posted it to Mike via contact page on this site as I have no other contact. When I analysed message I realised no Brit would say Madrid, Spain, whereas someone in USA or Nigeria might. I also took note of the small letter i's, the my self, and the capital m in Money. It also goes without saying that in that situation you'd contact family and friends, not your mailing list. I keep dipping in to this site to see if there is any word from Mike, and hope he can sort out the problem. Best wishes to all Trevor - That's weird Pat, I can't contact him via the Contact link, how strange! Pat Walton - Hi Trevor On the day I received message the contact link was working and I pasted message in. Now you can't use it. I imagine it will take time to sort site out and make it safe. Pat - I had this dodgy email ages ago and immediately knew it was suspect. I contacted Mike and he replied saying he had indeed been hacked. Hope all gets back to normal very soon. Trevor - It strikes me as curious that Mike hasn't left a message :-) Pat Walton - I'm sure Mike must be very upset to have been hacked . Perhaps he's lost heart now his "baby" has been mistreated in such a way. It would be nice to hear from him though. Coo-ey Mike!! helen pengelly - It looks a bit like Aldermaston?
Pat - Hoping this site gets going again in 2012. Happy New Year to one and all. |

From Adam: An earthenware bowl. |
From Adam: A stoneware bottle vase, potters mark T with three dots. |
Richard - by Robert Tarling Newport pottery Tom - Richard is correct. this is one of my late father's pots. However it look more like one from his Kersey Pottery days rather than the later Newport Pottery time. Adam - Thank-you both for your help - much appreciated. Mary Knight - So grateful that you have cleared up a very old mystery for me. I've been trying to find out whose mark this was for years and years. I am very fond of the few pots I have collected with this mark. Thanks. |
From Angus: A slab vase with a RD or DR monogram |
lisa - hi, i too have pots with this marking. did you find out who the artist is Mary - This may be a Peter Davies pot, Surrey? |

Phil - I've now foond a lamp base version of this on an American Auction House website confirming it is Sunset Ceramics. |
From LouAnn: A casserole with a spout, marked Mariann on the base. |
From Denise: A terracotta pot commemorating the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977 |
Leigh - Just a guess from looking at my book - Marilyn Williams, Plumstead London?? Chris Parker - This is a comemoration mug by Mary Wondrausch Brickfields Pottery. A nice piece and much sought after, though the seal is not quite complete. James - A nice litte Mary Wondrausch beaker. You see them appear on eBay from time to time - they normally go for £20-£30ish (at the moment - should be going for me I think). Denise - Just to say, thank you all for your information. It is much appreciated! |
From Carl: A raku bottle vase |
cerl young - i have a set of two of these , the signature on the base is very hard to see even with the naked eye (never mind a photo) but it starts with a t. carl young - i think the signature on the base is 'tina' could it have some connection to 'tina doubleday' (formerly of 'troika')?? |
From Carl: A green glazed platter with three legs |
From Trevor: A pair of 8" tall figural studio vases in terracotta representing a man and a woman. |
From Tony: A slab vase marked SL. |
Mark Nuttall - Slab vase is simon leach quite early I Think James - Its not one of Simon's pots, despite the seal looking very similar and totally understandable as to why you might think that. It might be a potter called Len Stevens who is always being listed as Simon Leach on eBay. Pat - Must be my eyes, because my book has a mark quite different to this for Len Stevens. Peter Day - It's by Laurie Short, a Cumbrian potter. I've seen several of these pieces and once got into trouble with Simon Leach for listing one as his on eBay. He's not in any of the books. Simon Leach has himself suggested Len Stevens, but he only makes ocarinas. |
From Sally: A fish decorated platter, the dark marks on the base are remnants of the felt that Sally had to remove to find teh potters mark. |
From Liz who has a cheese dish and a platter by the same potter who has a CR mark. |

From Phil: a pot with two marks on its base, one CM. |
From Chris: A tall vase with a mark that looks liek a teepee. |
Phil W - I think this could be Terri Penswick of Crowan (1980 - ) and Harvest Pottery. Pat - I agree - Terri Penswick. I've also seen this Teepee mark with a T & P at either side (top). |
From Michael: A small handled stoneware pot, bought in the USA but cound be British |

From Don: An 8.5" vase marked SW. |

From Alexander: A vase bought from anestate sale in the USA, clearly marked. |
John - Jeffrey Larkin perhaps? |
From Claire: A 9" stoneware jug with a band of Celtic knot pattern impressed around the base and at the base of the handle an impressed Celtic circular pattern and an impressed grid pattern along the handle. A very clear impressed big C with small p inside in a circle. On the base is a blue circular stamp which I can't quite read apart from possibly the word Celtic. |
Phil - Pretty sure this is a piece of Crowan Pottery Nigel - I'd suggest it's Conwy Pottery. Phil W - Hi, Crowan would have a finer finish than this - the Davis's were perfectionists. Not their glaze look either. I agree, it's possibly Conwy Pottery. Julie - Definitely Conwy - I have a brown version purchased from there yonks ago Pat - Another vote for Conwy! Glyn Nicholas - Not Harry Davis or Crowan. Laura - I agree it's Conwy Pottery as I have one at home. |
From Mike: A lidded pot with floral decoration |
Chris Parker - Could be Colin Kellam but not certain mike m - the mark I'm sure is upside down Martin - Isobel Denyer, perhaps? mike - Thanks for all your help butI have indentified it as Joe finch during his time in Lesothto mike - not Joe Finch but made at the kolonyama pottery in lesotho in 1986. Kind person emailed me who actually did the decoration. !!!! tricia davies - It looks like Lynda taylor's decoration on this pot. I own a few of graham and lynda pots and they give me great pleasure |
From Ed: A bottle vase marked PB and 1987. |
From Ed: A small finned vase marked either RS or RZ |

From Sally: A large blue dish purchased 10 years ago, signed Philip with an S monogram |

From Mary: A goblet with a painted mark |

Wendy - Adam Dworski? Wendy B - Above is from Wendy B as there are several different Wendys on here unknown - Thank you so much for the information, much appreciated. |
From Angela: A large blue vase with Fleur de Lys decoration. It has a pictorial seal with letters beneath |
Naomi - Looks like a styalized version of the lighthouse mark, used on 18th Century ceramics from Genoa. |
From Phil: A bud vase marked Y inside V |
Leigh - Hi Phil, Did you discover who made this? As I have a very similar pot (with the same mark). All the best Phil - Hi Leigh, No not yet. Its a really nice little vase and of a very high quality. Chris Parker - Could be David Winkley Vellow Pottery Phil Walsh - Thanks Chris, I'll check that out. David Winkley - Definitely not mine Pat - Any news on this? I have a few items with this mark and I cannot find out whose work it is. |
From Nigel: An ammonite vase with a CS mark |
From Steven: A deep bowl, interior gilt on white, exterior green, red and gilt, unusual cartouche type seal |
Yinchun - The seal has two Chinese characters. First rotate the picture counterclockwise 90 degree, then read up to down: first character is "Tao", means pottery; second one is "le", means enjoyment here. I guess the potter may be Chinese ,japanese or Korean Steven - Thankyou, Yinchun, I am very grateful to know that. The origin of this pot has been a great puzzle to me, and it is most satisfying to have some genuine information about it! |
From Steven: A stoneware spigot jar signed Paul Whalley - does anyone have any information on this potter? |
Katerina - Hello Steven, I just aquired some dishes (platter and dishes) with fish design on them by the same potter, Paul Whalley. The lady selling didn't know anything about them but they were in her nanas house for a while....Have you managed to find who this chap is? I really would like to at least date these plates...Many thanks, Katerina Mike Hall - A potter named Paul Whalley lived and worked at Ewlas Harold near Hereford in the 1970s -2000s. Believe Paul was quite highly qualified (a Licentiate of Design?). He changed his surname to Marley in the 1980s. Paul sold at craft fairs at Abergavenny and at Hay-on-Wye market. Latterly he produced terracotta pots for garden use. Lovely guy, quiet and unassuming. Steven - Thanks very much for that information, apparently the right attribution! The jar found its way to Suffolk. Anne Jennings - I know a potter named Paul Whalley who lived and worked in Exeter (where I grew up) during the 60s and 70s; we have a number of his pieces and the signature is right. He was a lovely man and made some splendid pots. His house and studio were on the corner of Barnfield Road and Denmark Road, fairly near the city centre on the Heavitree side. Gareth - I can confirm what Anne says. I have a piece which I bought from him in about 1969 in Exeter. It's flat tea or coffee pot with a bamboo handle. Gareth - I can confirm what Anne says. I have a piece which I bought from him in about 1969 in Exeter. It's flat tea or coffee pot with a bamboo handle. |

From Julie: A Pink and Mauve striped vase with a monogram mark |
Paul N - This is Chris Jenkins' mark. born 1933, he is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association. Robertson s - Hi did you find out who this mark is by as I,d like to know please? Robertson s - Hi did you find out who this mark is by as I,d like to know please? Robertson s - Cheers Paul N |
From Martin: A large earthenware bowl, 25cm across with a poured stripey slipware effect and a clear marl. |
From Leigh: A modern fruit bowl, no marks but impressive indeed |
Charles Payne - Maybe Ruth Duckworth...English later on American. Leigh - Hi have been 'nosing' around on net & the closest work I can compare it with is by 'John Mason'?? His forms seem very similar, But I'm no expert & these are some fairly 'big' names, It is a nice bowl though, Got some better pic's maybe I can update them?
Thanks for the info & I'll keep trying. Leigh - Would this be 'slipcast'? |
From Ann: A yunomi with painted leaf decoration with two distinctive marks. |
joe mac - possibly ian auld, would need to see a pick of the unomi itself. |
From Marsha: A bowl marked CP. |
Ruth - Cooper Pottery ? Pat - I saw this very mark today on aa item in a junk shop. It was very nice actually and the mark was really clear. CR - This could be Christine Purdy, near Kerry, Newtown, Powys. Otherwise possibloy Church Stoke pottery, Priest Weston,Shropshire...Owen Thorpe. Marsha - Thank you Pat,CR and Ruth. I've tried a little research on names mentioned without success but will keep trying. The red clay is throwing me a bit? Pat - Not Owen Thorpe. steve B - Try looking at Gordon Plahn regards steve keramike - Steve B has sussed it -It's GP not CP - definitly Gordon Plahn - clay/glaze/style, etc., I've loads of his pots. |
From Marsha: A three legged bowl with initials that my be EC? |
From Carl: A turquise bowl. |
Robertson s - Info please? |
From Howard: A 7cm tall earthenware pot, glazed inside and out, exhumed from a local garden |
gina - looks like the work of George Skey, wilnecote works,Nr Tamworth,staffs-1862-92. Darren - Same jar with "BQ" impressed on outside. Triangle mark underneath is different - almost resembling the pyramid with the all seeing eye above it and what might be "C & P" underneath triangle. Also oval mark with "Tamworth" inside, only half of that mark is visable. Any information on regarding the marks ? Darren - Actually I discovered it might be "C & B" for Cotton & Barlow Longton and the mark is actually a triangle with a square above it. Just need to know the "BQ" and what it was for, I was told caviar ? Mike - Have a jar. with the same marks. been trying to decifer them. only key and amworth were visible and the number 6 in the center. also the triangle and small square at the top with the letters "C & B" under. Stephen - I hav the George skey 1 the lady is talking about I found it while digging in a back garden in Chester |
From John in Oklahoma : This is a 5 inch tall green matte pottery vase with 3 deeply incised floral motifs and is just a beautiful example of the a&c movement. The number 6 appears on the bottom with unreadable block letters and initialed k.e. |
meg smeal - check the grueby pattern books - Jack - It appears to be a hand made studio vase. I collect the green A&C style studio pieces so any interest in selling? jrschmidt43@charter.net |
From Sally: A charger bought in Devon by my mother. |
Ann - I suggest Alan Caiger-Smith of Aldermaston Pottery. mark - sure it is aldermaston Mary - Certainly looks like it but doesn't ACS usually have a date symbol, too? potz100 - It is Alan C-S and is the mark used at his Homer Street, London studio between 1956 -63. Hence lack of date mark which would only be used at parrallel Aldermaston. |
From Andrew in New York: Hoping this is a Paul Soldner pot. Large jar, 14 inches tall. Marked PA/UL in a square, also has a large Japanese style mark and a smaller chop mark again looks Japanese and 1978 |
From Ewan: A pair of tall lidded jars marked JP. |
Anne/ Ewan - This is my pot. Could it be J Parkshurst from Brighton c1960? Does anyone have info on this potter? |
From Phil: A preserve pot marked JV or mayb JU of JL. |
tom parry - As far as one can tell from the photo it looks like JV in which case it could be John Vasey or John Visick. John Vasey is quite a prolific potter, still at it in St Agnes (Cornwall) and sometimes hard to identify because he is versatile and his output is varied. John Visick's mark is very hard to tell from Vasey's but he was active for a much shorter period in the 1970s (at Carnon Downs, near Truro, Cornwall). I am guessing this is his on the basis of the clay body. Phil - Hi Tom, Thanks for your reply. I wondered about John Vasey but couldn't find anything typical to compare it too. I live in Cornwall, so both make sense. mark from silsden - sure it is John Vasey as I had a vase with this mark Phil - Thanks Mark |

From Jo: A vase marked wit a JR monogram |
Pennyspad - I also have a blue pot similar in nature with the initials JR on it. |
From Sally: An intricate lidded vase with an unusual mark |
mike - Hello, it is a stylised A and O, from a male potter whos name completely escapes me. Will have a think. Richard - I think this was made by Andrew Osbourne (the partner of Jennie Hale) at Longham Pottery near Okehampton in Devon Sally - Thanks for your help. Someone else also agreed that it was made by Andrew Osbourne. Ann - I have two pieces by Andrew Osbourne and they are the same style, pattern and colour as yours |
From Mary: A jug, 19cm tall with fruit decoration. |
Mary - This is my vase, I was wondering if anyone could help to identify the potter as I can't make out the mark on base? Thanks to anyone who has information. Neil - Hi Mary, this jug is probably a cider jug from Normandy in France, possibly from the pottery at Ger or Le Tronquay in Calvados, although there are many local rural potteries. Hope this helps. Mary - Thanks Neil, most helpful. |
From Briget: A bowl with grape decoration marked DM? |

Bridget - Not sure which way up this mark is DM if rotated to the left |
From Lynne: A tankard with a leaf decoration. |

Tony B - Looks like sheldon brothers of clevedon - mark is usually an incised vase. unknown - Thanks for the info, it does appear to be Sheldon Pottery. |
From John: A pot marked with what looks like an S in a diamond. |
From Barbara and Roy: A vase marked on its side not on ikts base. |
unknown - It's very similar to the Lancastrian mark don't you think???? |

From Pat: A stoneware bowl marked Cp or possibly WP. |
Elli - this is by Collin Pearson Pat - Thank you Elli. I am thrilled if it is. Is this an unusual mark because I've not seen it listed against his name? It is a stunning bowl and has a fantastic feel to it. I can never pass it without touching it! Thanks again. Wendy - Sorry to be a doubting Thomas but are you sure Elli? I would be really interested if it is as like Pat, I have never seen that mark attributed to Pearson Phil Rogers - Sorry....definitely not Colin Pearson. Not sure who...maybe Philip Revell. can't see the mark too well....Paul Green? Pat - Interesting! I am convinced now that it IS Colin Pearson, having looked at other examples of his work. On another studio pottery site there is my exact bowl (inside view). Maybe Elli can tell us if this is maybe a mark which he rarely used. The mark is nothing like Philip Revel nor Paul Green. It is a lower case c joined to a lower case p with 2 small dots under each letter. Click for larger image. James H - Sorry, but this is NOT Colin Pearson. I agree 100% with Phil Rogers. I have seen many items of pottery with this (or a similar) seal. I recall it being somthing like Cooper Pottery? Pat - James - I'm pretty sure it is! If you look at Studio Pottery site you will see the interior of a bowl by Colin Pearson and this is SO like mine. I have never come across this mark before but "Elli" who replied earlier, may be Elli Pearson who has a pottery in Orkney and MAY be related. She possibly may know more than we do. This bowl has such a special feel to it that I go along with Colin Pearson. James - Hi Pat,
Its only my opinion based on the seal that your bowl isn't made by Colin Pearson. I have been wrong in the past and will be wrong again. Let us know if you do get attribution. Good luck with it. Regards steve - Colin Pearson from his time at aylesford Pottery the two dots are the same as david leach used at aylesford. Pat - Thanks Steve. I will see if I can take some better pics of the bowl itself and also the mark and get them on here. aki - nah no not colin pearson paul - Hi,I m a potter also dealing in earlier pottery. In my opinion this mark is not C.P. because it is too crude i.e.not neat and fluent .The texture of the clay is too roughI don t recall any of his pottery being of this nature.the bowl is ash glazed rather conservative in style, whereas C.P.worked mainly in oxidised stoneware. Before that I believe he ran the Aylesford pottery taking over from ,or with consultancy by D.Leach.
Pat - Paul. It must be my photography then because the mark is beautifully sharp. The clay is not rough either, it really is lovely to handle with great glaze. I will get some better pics on here soon. Thanks. Pat - Thanks to Mike for updating my pics. (30/10) Pat - I will post a really clear pic of the potters mark. John - Hard to tell from the photo but it seems similar to another posted higher up this list of pots by Adam? Richard has identified it as being made by Robert Tarling of Newport Pottery Pat - Thank you John but not Robert Tarling. My mark is clearly CP. steve - Check out Gordon Plahn his carries a mark that look like a cp Pat - Still thinking about my mystery bowl! Have been checking on Cooper Pottery and Philip Revell and Gordon Plahn and it's definitely none of those.Nothing like their marks and nothing like their style either. Thanks. Robertson s - Sounds like you got a Colin Pearson:) |
From Vicky: A small heavy tactile vase |

Peter - Nice looking Pot. Mark looks like 176 which could be a glaze test number. Enjoy it anyway. |

joe pope - Hi - I have 2 of the same style with the same marks - did you find who the mark was for please ? - please advise on joepope@live.co.uk if you can shed any light on it - thanks ! Vicky - Kate Bramwell Cole |
From Michael: A small vase marked LN, though to be Scandinavian |
James - The seal looks similar to an early John Nuttgens seal - but the pot doesn't look right.
http://web.me.com/johnnuttgens/john_nuttgens_ceramics/Welcome.html |
From Mark: A small vase marked ML, once thought to be a Michael Leach pot. |
Michael - This mark is similar to a mark used by US potter Mary Law (see further down this list); the difference being, in Law's current mark the M and L are conjoined. I wonder if she changed it due to confusion with M. Leach. Law studied with Byron Temple (though I don't know if it was in the UK, or during his period in the US. You can Google her name + ceramics and find her website--you might contact her to check. She is currently working in Berkeley, California, USA. She has been around for some time and is currently finding some notice among US pottery fiends. Mark Nuttall - confirmed by mary law this is not her pot still possible it is michael leach early vase as that is what it was purchased as |

From Angela: A condiment set marked SF |
david powell - sheila fournier Richard - I would confirm Shiela Fournier - I had a Lacock salt & pepper in exactly that cube form Leigh - Hi does anybody know if 'Robert Fournier' used a similar 'RF' mark? Richard - Robert has a mark listed as an RF. in the same style as this piece but its more common to see his mark with the reversed R conjoined to to the F |
From Phil: A coffee set, the jg has the makers mark. |
Russ - Try Tony Foard sunny - is that tony foard then? because i have the same makers mark on one bowl i have at home.. just to add to this, i have contact tony foard myself and sent him some pictures of the bowl i have at home i hope i get a reply from him soon. cheers |
From Karen: A small vase with flower decoration, WM mar but not William Marshall |
janet - I have come across this bow tie mark several times over the years and still do not know who it's by (mainly in cornwall)sorry. Pat - Jennie Phillips - (Dorset/Somerset)? Paul N. -
I've just bought a similar little vase with this exact mark on......and a paper label!
It's BW Pottery, Byfield, Northants. I can't find any ref. to it on WWW so I would assume that it was closed by the 1980's. Karen - Brilliant Paul, thank you so much. I have three of them and they are more like flasks than vases. |
From Jeremy : A vase with a painted mark to the base |
Ronnie Watt - This is without a doubt the work of the South African potter Andrew Walford, still active at his Shongweni studio and now considered one of the premier potters in the country. The mark denotes "Ohm". |
From Lynn: A shallow bowl, brown lightly glazed with slightly indented decoration inside. Impressed V on the base. |
From Ann: Two vases, one possible Paul Barron who worked with Henry Hammond as the potter mark is PM. The other mark looks like a caligraphy mark they have the reed brush pattern. |
From Marc: A blue vase, possibly Paul Bradley? |
paul bradley - No it`s not one of my pots I `m afraid. For further details look up Studio Works Gallery,Gloucestershire. |
From Mark: A tall 12" vase with a distinctive mark. |
Allison - I believe this is Mousehole cornish pottery. |
From Paula who has a number of pieces by this maker, any ideas? |
paul - This is what I call an evening class pot;the signature is scratched with a knife or pin. |
From Elizabeth: A blue coffee set. |
From Liz: A jug with what looks like the initials MO and then another mark next to it. I'm sure I bought it in Contemporary Ceramics, Soho, in the 80s. |
nigel watts - This jug was made by Bennett Cooper a very fine potter who died tragically young.
He was based at mistley quay in essex . Hope this helps Liz - Nigel,
Thanks very much for the info, it has been very helpful. Sad that Bennett Cooper died so young as it is a great jug and it would be good to have some more. |
From Vincent: The squared bottle is probably slab built, white earthenware. Painted and sgraffito decoration in oxides with a reduction firing to bring out the iron particles in the slip. Has a 60's, Paolozzi feel about it. |
Vincent - UPDATE. I beleive that this pot may be Spanish as I have recently acquired a vase with the same mark created for the Andalusian /Selsdon Park Golf Cup 2009. Info still wanted,
. |
From Vincent: A tall vase in the manner of Bob Dawe |
David - I think this could be Alan Wallwork. Vincent - Thank you but not AW. Mark is an interconnecting LM or LH (but not Louis Hudson). A Scandinavian origin has been suggested. arthur lewthwaite - having worked for in the sixties iwould say this is not an alan pot .i9ddented decoration to sparce.black and white glazses to bright, and more ochre colouring would be present, ialso think black and white would have been done with slips rather than glaze to give the subtle stoneware effect alan liked to achive. |
From Sheila: A 3" vase with initials FJ and a picture that looks a bit like a Celtic cross circle with lines going through it. |
Mark Nuttall - possible Margaret leach at taena pottery Sheila - Many thanks paul - Sorry, its not Margaret Leach.possibly an assistant. |
From Tony: An 11" tall vase |
paul - As above, this appears to be a scrawled signature The decoration is also scrawled, could be Italian. As you can see the design is rather ridiculous so Id minimise your losses and forget about it! (I m trying to be succinct, not rude!) Anthony - Funny I have never seen a triangle as a signature, and surly beauty is in eye of the be holder! To be fare the pictures are not great, I think it's from New Zealand or Auz? Robertson s - Read other,s posts I was reading a few that mentioned triangle marks |
From Tony: Another 11" tall vase, same maker as the one above. |
From Louise: A small vase |
paul - Again ,another aesthetic disaster. I thilnkl it is possibly evening class or a glaze test using an exploded pot. Wendy - This is a Fat Lava pot and a beautiful one at that. Probably West German. Sue - I don't think this is a Fat lava pot, they are usually marked on the bottom
From Louise: A set of 4 pots from the same maker |

Louise - hi! Just to add that 2 of the pots have what looks like CP then a zero and 2 of them have the same CP mark with 1 on them Louise - any ideas on these 4 anyone? :-) |
From Louise: A small vase with frog decoration |
From Louise: A squared bottle marked MC |
paul - This is another evening class pot,in my opinion. One can spend ages trying to identify an unknown mark, but I am just suggesting some short cuts to the problem of identification, like what does the pot feel likle, does it flow,?has it been made by a practised hand-it shouold be because otherwise it is of relatively little merit.Ssorry I ve got to got to supper now,I will return soon! Louise - the design flows around the shape of it and the bottle neck top is really well done to my amateur eye, it feels professional but then I don't really know I suppose - I've shown it already to a collector of many years who said it was 50/50 that it could be a hand-signed Michael Cardew, (!) so I find it hard to imagine that its not even professional studio work, it is beautiful in the 'flesh', tactile and weighty. any opinions welcome obviously, especially as I'm trying to learn! (Please be kind/polite though, thanks awfully... :-)) ) Mary - There are several potters (with degrees, diplomas etc) who, for various reasons, changed their careers and now "keep their hand in" at evening class! |
From Alex: An oatmeal glazed stoneware jar marked IS or JS |
Pat - Jane Smith, Cumbria? Richard - I don't think thats Jane Smith at all Peter - This definitely by Daniel Smith, Archway Ceramics, E London. Pat - I agree Peter. It looked like a JS to me. Sorry! |

Dameon Lynn - Sorry, I've ever made anything as boring as that :) mark - Hi I am aware the pot is not Dameon Lynn as I have a pot of his David - "Dameon Lynn - Sorry, I've ever made anything as boring as that :)"
No, you just make boring Hans Coper impersonations! Dameon Lynn - My apologies David but please understand that one has start somewhere. One day my work might be as influential as yours! Dameon Lynn - Hi Mark, I was only messing about, hence the smiley! People are pretty serious around here aren't they? Nice to hear you have one of my piece, I appreciate your support. Mark - thanks Dameon not too serious about my pots have 100 or more to buy another of yours when I can afford it no offence taken Ade - This is a piece by Aladair Dunn of the Arran pottery. Mark - I have two vases one other small brown one with same mark have been trying for ages to find out who potter is James - Hi Mark, You bought both pots from me via eBay. I tried to find more about these pots before they were sold and found nothing! I bought these pots in a 'job lot' from a local auction house which included some fine studio pottery works. I know these pots are finely thrown and are fine examples. I hope you find the maker.

From Trevor: A 26cm stoneware plate marked with a dot |
Mark Nuttall - think the plate could be eric stockl I have a vase with a mark which looks very like this Ruth Stockl - hello
this looks very much like one of my grampa's pots, definitely seen that glaze before and that is his mark (although it's pretty generic!) Trevor - Thanks for your thoughts. However I can't find any reference to this mark being one of Eric Stockl's in British Studio Potters. If this is by him then is it from the period 1977-2001 when he worked in Addingham, W. Yorkshire. The reason I ask is that it was in a box of pottery bought at auction along with a William Plumtre bowl (from the period 1987 onwards when he worked first at Hartsop, Patterdale, Cumbria and then at Witherslack, Cumbria) and which contained another pot of interest which looks to have the mark of Sam Hall who worked in Haworth, W. Yorkshire (1991-95), before moving to St Ives Cornwall. I tried contacting him by email with aphoto or two, via the Gaolyard Studios but they/he didnt reply. The possible Sam Hall pot is nothing like his later work more of a simple flared vase or beaker. The faceted pot listed above is another pot from the same lot and there seems to be a nothern/Cumbrian/W Yorkshire theme mark nuttall - possible is Eric Stockl as I got my pot in a charity shop in Ilkley which is very close too addingham sam hall - Sorry for not replying, never got the email... however would be interested in seeing the pot if you still have the image?
Sam@samhallceramics.com. sam hall - Sorry for not replying, never got the email... however would be interested in seeing the pot if you still have the image?
Sam@samhallceramics.com. stewart cameron - Yes, Trevor. I can confirm Eric Stockl's grand daughter's affirmation re the mark on your plate.I have a number of the admirable Mr Stockl's pots, which I purchased from his pottery in the old Mill House in Ilkley in the 1980,s.He introduced the mark on your plate in around 1989/90,as I recall, prior to which he applied an impressed ES mark within a small cartouche.I have yet to see his name in any pottery reference book, but would wager that it can only be a matter of time before he is given the recognition his accomplished stoneware deserves. He used to hold an annual exhibition sale in Holland and was widely appreciated there, and , indeed ,on one occasion sold me one of his exhibition pieces before it made it to Holland, insisting that he would make another one! Mrs Stockl, half Russian, half Indian made the most wonderful ecclesiastical tapestries too! A very gifted and lovely couple! |

Chris - I have recently inherited a vase marked JP also. Have you found out anything about the maker? I have no knowledge of where this was even made so any information would be fantastic! Dana - Hi Chris,
I saw a similar mark on a different post, and someone replied they thought it might be J. Parkshurst. It also had a circle going around the JP. Hope this helps. |

From Leigh: A vase with a floral design, mark could be LE or maybe a trident? |
Leigh - I know, I know I'm commenting on my own 'pot' but have looked again at the mark, Could it be 'Kenneth Quick'? 'Tregenna Hill'? Any thoughts would be appreciated? Pat - Any chance of a better image of the mark please? Diane - R Hamer maybe? Leigh - Thanks for your responses, thats about as good as my camera allows sorry I will try though! & the mark looks similar to marie & richard hamer but I have been unable to find any work to compare it with! Ralph - It is possibly that this is also an X or cross in a box.. I am thinking the same as the other australian pottery marks.. just a guess..
ralph - also noticing someone below is suggesting alan burough for a similar one of this kind-of mark Leigh - Hi I would have loved an 'Alan Brough' but I'm pretty sure its not one of his, But I have had another look through my book & have found 'John Wynne Morris' of 'Conwy Pottery' pre 1980?? Still unsure though? mark - I have pottery from Alan Brough this is not his pottery Mark |

From Clare: A stoneware cheese dish with a monogram mark |

unknown - Hi, pretty sure its a potter from Devon U.K. I have the same, although with brushed decoration. Phil Wadsworth - Hi, possibly Benjamin Eeles of the Eeles Family Pottery of Dorset. You could contact them to ask. They have a website. |
From Catz: A small stonware bowl with makers initials and a bird |
Diane - Dove Pottery perhaps Jon - You know I have a piece with a mark just like this except the bird is more like a hummingbird and its above the MTP. Anyone have any idea the order of the letters in the name? or the studio that made it? Jon - I have been doing further research and I think it might be from Turtle Mountain Pottery in Belmont, ND Ran from 1936-1942 was a pottery school for Chippewa Indians. Its very rare if that is what it is. These marks that we have seem to be the instructors marks and not the kids. These pieces are of a true master and not kids. This is why the marks are different I think. Jon - I know who this is now. It is miranda thomas pottery. I am 100% sure.

From William: A small vase with sytlised tree design, marked JMC |
LINDY - THIS IS THE MARK OF JANE McCORMICK OF LEICESTER Sarah - Can you tell me how much something like this would cost. Sarah - Can you tell me what this would be used for - possibly a hat pin holder? or some type of bud vase?
Sarah - Can you tell me what this would be used for - possibly a hat pin holder? or some type of bud vase?
circe - I have one of these which is in a pearlised lilac colour but also has a little lid. Jane McCormick - Hi this is one of my pots. Circe is right it has a small lid it is called a small ginger jar - not intended to be used for anything specifically, however it is glazed inside so it holds water . This is a very old design, the technique I used here was to dip the pot in engobe (slip) and then wax resist the trees and then sponge the excess engobe. My designs are still based on landscapes but the colours have changed a over the years. This shape with my new designs sells at craft fairs at £9.50 |

From Karen: A salt glazed jug or mug, has a Wally Keeler look about it |
LINDY - i think the back stamp you have shown is from another pot Karen - Yes, Its from the small pot below, I sent four pics to Mike, so this top two pics show the bottoms of the two pots below Ant - the impressed mark Although it looks like DH could possibly be DK Dorothy Kemp....my dad had a Dorothy Kemp jug and it looked more like DH |
From Karen : A small lidded jar, the design looks like Dartington |
Bridget - Re. the small lidded jar, I saw a similar design and impressed mark on a piece which also had a paper sticker for David Hinson.Hope this helps. Karen - Thanks Bridget, I will look into it. Steven - Hi Karen, Re the small lidded jar, I have a (nice) teapot (lugs with cane handle) with very similar pattern (leaves or petals with these brushmarks, and small berry clusters) and the impressed DH mark. Were you able to verify David Hinson or find out more? I should be interested to learn about him. Steven - The lidded jar is definitely by Dave Hinson made probably during the 1980s when he was resident potter at Stanford Hall near Lutterworth, Leicestershire. He now produces different wares (2011). Karen - Thanks Steven, thats loads of info. I really love my little pot, I'm glad to know who made it..... :) joemac - jug has a wally keeler look to it. Lesley Barrett - The little jug does look like Wally Keeler...Does it have his mark on the side near the base?..a small spiral? Karen - Unfortunately the saltglazed jug has no markings at all. You can see the base on the pictures above.I was wondering if it may be an early piece which Wally didn't mark. |
From Fliss : A tankard reminiscent of early David Leach |
tom parry - I don't have any books with me to check the mark but Peter Lane rings a bell. Fliss - Hmmm, could be, the book says he did tin-glazed earthenware to 1974 apparently. Food for thought, thank you. Jim - David Leach and Marianne de Trey produced similar tin-glazed work in the 1950s. Could the mark be 'LD'? Fliss - I wish! POTZ100 - It's Frank Robinson, Polperro Pottery, 1973 onwards. Do not look in BSPM as not listed properly as usual. Paul - If this is David s work it must have been in his macho phase! Christian Robinson - I can confirm that this was made by my father Frank Robinson of Polperro Pottery. It would have been made around 1972 as he was not really well enough after that, dying in March 1974 aged 42. Fliss - Christian, thank you for the attribution. What a shame your father died so young. John Sharp - lucie rie? She did tea sets like this. Also handle similar to Emmanuel Cooper and they where friends. Glyn - Is this for sale |
From Fliss : A ginger jar marked with a thumbprint but known not to be Sebastian Blackie |
Fliss - I contacted Sebastain Blackie to ask if the thumbprint mark was his (I have not seen his work). He said no, but it could be William Marshalls - he worked with him for a while? He asked for extra pics which I sent but I have had no further contact from him. The base shows Xs but not the accepted mark for Bill Marshall. |
From Eileen : A couple of earthenware chargers with bird designs |
Fliss - Could it be Seth Cardew? Eileen - Fliss-Thanks for the suggestion, but the design is tube line raised effect,so not sure. Wendy B - Nothing like Seth's decoration I am afraid- don't know whose it is though, sorry |

From Frank White : Trying to track down this Slip Ware Salt Pig maker could it be Paul Berman Stroud or Frank Benatt Bristol I found these in B S P marks book |
lindy - Try Alan Brough i have a piece and the back stamp looks the same to me. keramike - It does resemble Alan Brough's mark, but not his work. It is much closer in style, clay, and decoration to early Clive Bowen, and although he doesn't sign work these days, once again, what can be seen of the impressed mark is extremely close to his original stamp. Why not go on his website and ask! Suzi - I trained with Paul Berman and this looks like his work paul - hello suzi. Very early salt kip from when I was in Stroud. PB |
From Dave McCann : A small stoneware vase marked PS |

From Howard Crosby : A bowl marked INGA |
Sean - Could be Inga Diener
From Tom Hutchinson : A pot marked AH with a top like a shirt collar |
Colin Heg - Could be Agnete Hoy steve - is this vase worth anything ?? and is the vase made by Agnete Hoy ?? Martin B - Hi Tom
I acquired a piece with the same signature on the base. It's very difficult to decipher. I've looked ta the Agnete Hoy website where it shows the marks she used and none of them resemble this so it's safe to say it's not her work. It clearly isn't from looking at the work she produced.
What could this signature say? The capital A is clear and then it looks like a capital H but what comes next? It looks like two dashes followed by some other letters. Is that a Y in there? Have you made any guesses Tom? By the way, I acquired mine in Norwich |
From Fred Hawken : A 2 tone blue dripped glazed mug the mug is partly not glazed in the centre to make a pattern around the middle it is fully glazed inside as well the mug which measures 5 inches high. The marking on the base is like 2 symbols. |

From Liz McGregor : This is a blue bowl, glazed interior, glaze finishes just before the foot of the bowl outside, with a brown stripe between. A clear mark on the base that looks like JB or GB? |
tom parry - This looks to me like the mark of Ginnie Bamford who potted at Clock House Pottery, Tregony before moving down to the Sloop Craft Market in St Ives, now retired. Hilary Hughes - This is Dennis Bullock's mark. He worked in Saltash and Pillaton, Cornwall in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. He died a couple of years ago. I can send a picture of the marks on pots I own if you want verification. Hilary - (his name was John Dennis Bullock - known as Dennis but liked the monogram JB) |

From Ann Tindall : I wonder if anyone has any ideas re the origin of this gorgeous blue glaze mat and gloss blue bowl, diameter 17 cm. There is an embossed shape of a flower with 6 petals and embossed initials. I think the initials read either SH or LH. |
From Amanda Brawn, a small globular vase with a painted signature |
Antoinette B - Hi, I have a vase with same signature, can not find out who made it. Showed it to expert at
Antiques Roadshow he said to contact the Craft Council of UK and Ireland as they may be able to help. |
From Mauricio Carvalho, a dish or planter with a mark that looks like a dove. |

From Ralph Lott, a casserole, 9 1/2 inches across with scratched signature |
From Karen Fincham, a raku pot with a signiture, can you read it? |
Paul N. - I've just bought a similar little vase with this exact mark on......and a paper label!
It's BW Pottery, Byfield, Northants. I can't find any ref. to it on WWW so I would assume that it was closed by the 1980's. Johnny H - There is an earlier reply to this mark, it is an M and a W = MW |
From Amanda Brawn, a small bowl 7 incles across |
Richard - Have you been lucky and found a Jack Docherty piece? Richard - To correct the identification on this item. It is by Paul Bradley of Nailsworth, Gloucs. Paul pots there but also has a nice array of studio pottery for sale, so if you are in the Stroud area its well worth a call to his shop on Fountain Street (the main hill thru Nailsworth) Amanda - Thanks for the info - will check it out next time I'm down that way. paul bradley - I can confirm this is a stoneware bowl made by me in London. My present location is 26,Fountain Street,Nailsworth,Glos (01453 833 733).where I produce a range of domestic ware and one-off sculptural pieces,as well as a range of early
british ,studio pottery. Amanda Brawn - Many thanks for posting the response |
From Paul Barrett, possible West G|erman, marked PRIEST MARIANS |
From Pete Turgyan, a jug marked cp, is this Gordon Plahn? |
Nigel - I think it's probably Cooper Pottery which was in Shropshire. |
From Tim Howell: A small; bowl, 13cm in diameter, with a lozenge shaped stamp of AJ, alseo signed AJ |
From Aaron McKeown: A stoneware bottle, 22 cm tall with a mark that looks like back to back Ks. |
Sam - I have a smiliar vase, bulbous, with a duck-egg blue glaze clearly stamped KS Aaron Mckeown - Is it stoneware? paul pots - A stunning quality vase,I have checked my book for the mark and havnt come across it. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX - Now listed on ebay - item# 180409346623 tom parry - I can't make out the mark in the photo but might guess at Colin Kellam - he marks with two Ks, one reversed. Haven't seen any pots like this from him though. Mary - I believe this is Karen Karens from Vermont in the USA. Her chop mark is mirrored K's. aaron mckeown - I emailed Colin Kellam & it isnt him, karen karnes is a good call but i cant find that much info on her. aaron mckeown - Karen Karnes has inscised k's these are raised like a stamp.
Rachael - This vase is by Karen Karnes. Worth 200-500 USD aaron mckeown - Thanks Rachael , Glad it didnt manage to sell on ebay for a tenner! Ive had it on display and love it. phil - I would say more $1000 - $2000 for such a rare piece. Ceramike - Sorry everybody, looks like I have loaded overwritten the images! meg smeal - doesn't look like karen karnes work to me - she usually only has one stamp which is back-to-back "k"s - can't see your mark so clearly... of course I could be wrong.. you could email her (in vermont) and check -still working there - new book out on her work - jake - Not Karen Karnes at all. Strict "KK" only, either hand written or stamped. |
From: Al Baynham : A small scraffito decorated footed bowl with a painted mark. Is it David Lloyd-Jones? |
Al Baynham - I have recently found out it is by Ray Marshall for Bridgefoot Pottery. It is actually listed on eBay. |
From Don Holley: A small vase with a circular mark as well as SH 88 on the base. It stands 82mm high and is 90mm across |
Richard - The H with 2 dots was used by a potter named Ray Hoole, but I have no biographical information that would confirm the significance of the SH and date mark Don Holley - many thanks. |
From Mary Keates: A pair of candlesticks, both impressed with mark that looks like JJ or ff with a dot. Both inscibed "mona" and one inscibed with rough swan shape |
Sean - Hi there I'm not sure if this helps but there is a Sylvia Mona who designs candlesticks for Orrefors glass in Sweden it could be one of her designs? Mary - I've tried to find out more but no joy yet. Thanks for your help. LINDY - JOHN JELFS USED J.J.1985- AND A SWAN 1973- Richard White - Could be John Jones who potted at the Mona Pottery - Llanfairpwllgwyngyll Anglesey ("Mona") in the late 60's-70's but I do not recognise this mark. |
From Rob Foster : Rob has been told that this bowl comes from an island off Sweden. |
From Sally Hyams: A 6 inch tall vase with a distinctive mark on the base. |
Amanda - You may be interested in the information on the following website, where there is for sale a ewer in the same style as your vase. http://www.pallasantiques.com/european_porcelain_pottery.htm |
From Michael Hickman in the US - A vase marked LM |
Michael Hickman - Have since learned this is the mark of Mary Law, American potter who apprenticed with Byron Temple. Mary Law - Sorry, that mark is similar to mine, but I didn't make that vase. It doesn't look familiar to me, either; sorry. |
From James Hazlewood - An ornate ash glazed pot marked LH |
Al Baynham - The mark looks like Louis Hudson but the pot doesn't... James Hazlewood - Thanks Al, I agree totally with both your comments. The mark also looks like Len Hollman but the pot does not! I have showed the clock to John Jelfs who suggested that the potter that made the clock was a very good and accomplished one - but also had no idea as to the maker! Any other suggestions are more than welcome. len hollman - I made the pot.Is it for sale?
lenandestherhollman@hotmail.co.uk
James Hazlewood - Hi Len, Thanks for letting me know that this pot was made by you. I have just sent you an email. |
From Moira Willis - A vase with a leaf shaped mark |
MOIRA WILLIS - LOOKS MORE LIKE A DOVE I THINK |
From Mark Nutall: A blue earthenware dish with a good set of marks, is it Taena? |
Wendy - This mark keeps cropping up on Ebay and is stumping everyone- several have claimed Sid Tustin at Taena but I certainly have no knowledge of Sid ever being at Taena and it isn't much like any of his ST marks either. James H - Also the Taena mark that is documented appears within a circle rather than a square! Having said that, there are plenty of marks that are not documented. I think it is more than likely a Taena.
I have called the pottery before and found them to be very friendly and helpful. I am sure they would be happy to take a look at some images etc and confirm or deny! mark N - I now have the dish feel it could be margaret leaches mark with another potter however margarets mark is usually in a circle I am to further research mark N - confimed on contacting Taena as not potted there possible Llagollen Amanda - Is the second letter definitely a 't' or could it be a lower case 'r'? PhilW - This looks like Margeret Leach's mark when she was at Taena. Her Taena cross in a circle was different in that the cross lines protrude beyond the circle. Taena's do not as far as I understand. Suggestion.......thrown by Margeret Leach between 1951 and 1956 whilst at Taena and painted/glazed by someone with intials SR or ST ?. Joe - Not a Taena mark, noone with those initials worked there. The style and glaze are also nothing like the Taena pots produce by Loo Groves or Maragaret Leach. There is a remote chance it was made there by an apprentice with a different stamp but almsot certainly another pottery. |
From Mark Nutall: Small dish and bowl with an LL mark, Lyn Lovitt back in the 1980s? |
Mark N - it has been confirmed by lyn lovett herself the pots are not her work after contacting her by email ralph - LD? david leach or some sort of faked replica? ralph - come to think of it, the pottery on the right has some of the characteristics of the Leach pottery.. with the change in glaze at the base and the strange geometric patterns Robbin - Lisa Larson |
From Mike Peckett: An earthenware teapot marked LD |
Jay - I bought a similar looking teapot this weekend with same Potters Mark on it.
I am in Cape Town, South Africa.
Is there anyone with some more information on the pots?
Thanks. |
From Jason in Australia: A shino glazed stoppered bottle |
Ralph - going across the australian marks this looks like possibly an X in a box.. possibly by Lex Hixon.. |
From Rob : A slipware puzzle jug. Ros has three pots from this maker, all from the Newcastle area. |
David Walker - early South Heighton pottery - Ursula Mommens or Chris Lewis Rob - Thanks David, but sadly not South Heighton. I was lucky enough to show a piece with this mark to Chris who stated it definitely wasn't a SH piece. The mark is very similar, but the 's' shape is cut off at the bottom deliberately. Mary - I own a pottery moon flask with a similar mark stamped on the bottom so would like to know if Rob has found out more. |
From : Kimberley Kroemer : An unusual teaset with a signed mark |
jim roberts - That looks very much like the LEAPER mark Cornwall.
If it is it is possibly one of the most unusual of his designs and would be worth a lot of money, it might be possibly by his son.I started collecting it 25 yrs ago and have some experience of the mark. Robbin - Not Leaper keramike - Undoubtedly Leaper - lovely set - very collectable |
From Mark Morris : Stoneware vase with mark on side |
Keramike - This has the look, and a somewhat similar shape,to Chinese ginger jars imported over the centuries - very provincial/coarse clay and basic firing with a rough glaze - it could well be a couple of hundred years old - I'd like to see the base.
The mark would sem to support the guess at a far east origin. |
From Bryan Langton : 1953 coronation mug with what appears to be marked VW? |
Mark - Margaret Leach did early work with a mark like the Vw car badge might be of interest Hillary Newton - I have an identical mug, but in a beautiful pale lime green, same cream background, glaze is crackled and same mark. I believe it is Margaret Leach. |
From Di Williams : vase. It is 33cm in height and is clearly impressed with a square potters mark T H |
Mike W - This may be by German ceramicist Josef Hehl. Bridget - I have a pot with same mark which has a label for Goathurst Somerset. I cannot find any information on the pottery. Hope this helps. |
Shallow stoneware bowl, 28cm x 6.6cm, mark 99% obscured, wax resist decoration. |
James H - David Frith?? Fliss - Certainly very reminiscent of Frith. Can you trace over the mark to get any clue? |
Small pedestal bowl, beautifully made and glazed, 10.5cm x 6.5cm. Mark is a symbol which looks like a circle cut in half, could represent CD ? |
Richard Smith - I suspect this might be by the late Brian Paul Bearne at the Rainbow pottery in Torquay. Apparently he mainly made bowls. Depends where you found it of course! Emma Lloyd-Jones - The bowl is made by David Lloyd-Jones - he used at least half a dozen marks and this is an early one - a stylised FP for Fulford Pottery where he worked. Later marks use his name, the last being L-J. Abigail Lloyd-Jones - I always thought that this was a sylised DLJ for David Lloyd-Jones. Definitely his though. |
From Al Baynham, any ideas? |
Richard Smith - I have seen this mark identified but can't remember who it was. It regularly crops up as a Janet Leach attribution (obviously wrong!!).. If you turn it the other way up it becomes a TP - and I think those were the potters initials. Wendy - It is a West German pottery, constantly listed on Ebay as Janet Leach Fliss - This is Tolcarne pottery, no longer in existence. I sold one a few months ago on E-bay. tom parry - Hallo, the previous correspondents are all on the right lines. The potter was Roger Veal who operated the Tolcarne Pottery in Newlyn. There is a little information about him onwww,studiopottery.com. He trained at Bath Art School anddid some teaching in Cornwall. This is one of the simpler forms which were, perhaps, aimed mostly at the tourist trade. He was mostly interested in more sculptural forms and the Carnsew Gallery in Hayle still has a very interesting stock of these. His wife is German and they have moved to Germany in his retirement. Roger Veal - the stamps shown (upside down) is TP and was used for the studio ware. For my individual pieces I used a different stamp. Yes, I studied at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham where James Tower was the pottery teacher. I then went to the College of Ceramics at Alfred Univ. New York.where among other good teachers, Daniel Rhodes taught.I was lucky to be his studio assistant.I then worked in Los Angeles and Texas before returning to Cornwall. I was invited to to set up a pottery Dept. at the Redruth School of Art, part of the then Cornwall Technical College. Tom Parry ,see above, is correct, I was more interested in sculptural forms and the formed the basis of various exhibitions I had. Not potting any more, but still collecting a pot here and there. Hannah - Message for Roger Veal. Have just purchased one of your slab vases. Looks like a wine glass with a stylised fish coming out of it & a spiral above that. I love it. Were any of your pots featured on the front cover of an art book as this design is really familiar to me somewhere from my childhood ?! |
From Anne Delnevo - I am wondering if anyone can identify the potter of this lidded pot? The initials seem very obviously “my” or “ny” |
Alec - Could be Hugh West. West Pottery. Modbury Devon. 1975-1981. Wendy - It isn't like any of the several marks for Hugh I have in my files, never seen him decorate like that either gina - just a guess but you could try Nick Membery, potted in london, sussex and wales HUGH WEST - I DID NOT MAKE THIS POT |
From Myrna, a ginger jar with a GJG mark on its base. |
Nigel - I believe the pot is the work of Graham Glynn, possibly during his Skipton period (the middle initial is a 'P' rather than a 'J'). Louise - does anyone know when Graham Glynn worked at Skipton? I have a vase of his from then and would like to know the era :-) Thanks Graham Glynn - Yes it's one of mine from Skipton. I had a studio here from 1981 to 88. I now have a workshop at Yewtree Barn, near Grange over Sands in Cumbria. Thanks for the interest. |
From Andrew Greenway. This slipware bowl is marked DK, could it be Dick Kendall, does anyone have any information on the bowl or the potter? |
Kevin Graham - It looks more like EW to me |
From Steve Hunter - This bowl is 19 cms. in diameter and 7 cms. tall; the impressed mark is "EW" and there is a painted mark which might say HB? |
greg - hi, i have a very similar bowl with the same markings did you ever find out who it was? Steve Hunter - Hi Greg, nope, I´m afraid I´m still waiting for some identification of this piece. Any one able to help? cj19 - It could be Miss E Wallis 1935-58 who impressed initials in a seal-type mark (GODDEN p. 645) |
From Simon Willcocks - This fine slipware jug is 23cm tall, made from rough red clay and unfortunately unmarked, any suggestions? |
DebraRay - Looks a little like Michael Cardew's glazing or an influence of his work in Nigeria except the handle, no thumb knot, not all of his jugs had them but many did. Is the handle smoothed dwn in "Chinese Whiskers" in the back, or a mooshing of the thumbs as Mick Casson puts it? I have seen many of Cardew's pots (Pioneer Pottery) that seem like they have a stamp though. Listen to the interviews with Mick Casson, he said he, himself stopped putting marks on things, because if something happened to the mark,if glaze ran on to it or it wasn't very clear, people were less likely to buy his pots, he felt that this was an undue prejudice. If one liked a pot they should buy the pot on it's merits not on the mark it's self. Might be the case here, or just that many old world potters didn't feel their wrk was worthy of a marks. Sorry so long, good luck! DebraRay - Try this web site for Philip Leach, I don't know how or if, they sign their pots but glaze and styles look very similar? www.springfield-pottery.com simon willcocks - Debra - Thanks for your help. I have only just found the Springfield site and I agree that the work does look very similar but my pot looks much older(40-60 years?)than those shown by Philip Leach. I guess that Philip Leach may be able to help but I have been unable to contact him by e-mail. Regards Simon zoe - Looks like a Clive Bowen , Sheepwash, Devon simon - Whilst it is similar in some respects, I would be very surprised. I have several contemporary pieces by Bowen and they differ in feel and look to this jug, which also has some age to it. Also, this jug has 'dragged' marking whereas Bowen's marks are applied by brush. Thanks anyway! tom parry - I have some similar pottery which I showed to Clive Bowen who identified a jug as lekiely to have been made by Philip Leach when they were working together at Sheepwash. He did not recognise the clay in the other pieces. I now suspect that they were made at Callander in Scotland by Peter Luti from seeing pots advertised on ebay. Peter Luti - Sorry but this is not one of mine - only made a few slipware items at Goldsmiths, London in 1970. Am still on the lookout to buy back any stoneware that I made 1971 to around 1988! mike - Try Winchcombe pottery Paul Jessop - - Hi some one asked me if it was one of mine, sadly not but it is lovely. Bry - Could Alan Frewin be a possibility, the glaze, decoration and clay colour are very much like his. doug fitch - I'm pretty sure it is a Philip Leach piece - certainly it looks like Fremington clay fired in a wood kiln. Try this email for PL philip.leach1@virgin.net SMUDGER - It's from the "Ravenscroft" "Kent" stable!! pat - Hi Peter Luti i read your comments and i think i might have a piece that you might be interested in buying back if you contact me i will send you pics thanks pat James - Looks very much like a piece by Clive Bowen to me - red clay, wood fired and un-signed. |
From Robert Foster, Norfolk - This plate is marked Blanchard and a another word which is probably where it was made. Can anyone decifer the word? |
Jean Larrouy, France - The name is actually "Blanchard". This potter worked at KERALUC, in Quimper, France. Quite rare ! |
From John Schram of Newport Beach, California. John has considerable knowledge of American Art pottery but this pot has stumped him, can anyone help? |
Michael - Don't know, but it is beautiful! |
From Barry Young who purchased this vase in Ontario twenty years ago but has been unable to identify the mark on its base. |
Paisley - If the markings are the initials SL, it is quite possible this is one of Simon Leach's pieces. It's just a guess though. James H - Hi, just to advise that this isn't a Simon Leach. |
From Claire: A brown pink matt glaze on stoneware with quite pronounced horizontal throwing rings on the exterior and then wider vertical raised ridges. The mark is impressed and looks a bit like an upside down BJD? |
Matt - It isnt a Bridgette Drakeford is it? |
From Claire: is a dark greeny black speckled glaze with, on either side a dark painting of a bee or a drooping flower? The mark looks like an impressed PH or BH in a rectangle - the upper loop of the P or B looping through the H? |
Ralph - I would suggest DL on its side... |
From Chris Parker - An ovid vase with makers mark on the underside |
Matt - looks like its steph black pot to me |
Temmoku glazed stoneware cider jar with pronounced throwing rings. 38cm tall, 26cm wide. Except for the rim, the underside is also glazed. Purchased from a collector's market a couple of years ago. There is a mark with might be an A inside a D stamped on a ball of clay at the base of the handle. This is a great piece and is one of my favourite pots. |
Joanna Bird - 99% sure this is a Danlami Aleju pot, probably made whilst he was at Wenford Bridge. |
From Daniel Bradbury -A small salt glazed jug with makers mark. |
Fliss - This could be Rebecca Harvey. I can't download the photo of the mark so can't be sure. Could it be RH? James H - Agreed 100% Rebecca Harvey - The photo does not open but I can make out an R and H from the thumbnail image - same marks as a couple of RH pots I have. Ceramike - The image is now available, looks like you have identified the pot without it, well done! daniel - thankyou so much for your wonderfull help. |
This blue and white jug comes from Daniel Bradbury who has tried to identify the mark with no success. It looks like HL but if it is the potter put the mark on upside down! |
Richard Smith - Is this Suleyman Saba? Sharon Campbell - Hi Richard, check out this website which has a fantastic data base for identifying marks
Good luck let me know if you find it...devinacambell@aol.com
http://www.potterymarks.co.uk/links.html Suleyman Saba - Not my work. |
Earthenware vase, 26cm tall, 18cm wide. Brushed floral (?) decoration. Purchased from a collector's market earlier this year. There are two marks on opposite sides of the vase at its base, a makers monogram - fjw (?) and a bird which looks like a pelican. |
Chrissy - I myself am trying to find a name!! frustrating isnt it anyway when I looked at yours I think it may be Wren - I think initial is J - hope you have luck

Stoneware jug, 30cm tall, 18cm wide with floral decoration. Purchased from a collector's market last year. The jug is marked PG near its base. I have shown it to both Paul Gardiner of Mevagissy Pottery and Paul Green of Cerne Abbas but both deny responsibility! |
Kaye Forsythe - Could it be Pat Groom of Winchcombe Pottery? Kevin Graham - It looks like a Westerwalder region piece from Germany, Westwalder had over 80 potteries all producing near identical pottery |
Frank Gricus of Pittsburgh purchased this pot in the U.K. in 2005, it is 21cm tall and 12cm at its widest. Can anyone decifer the maker's details? |
Ann Bristow - Mark says Lemon & Son 504 Weston-S-Mare.Wesuma Pottery. In 1926 Tom Lemon bought a pottery in Weston- super-Mare. He first produced Torquay type pottery but later produced his own designs. He died in 1941 and the pottery was destroyed by a bomb in 1942. Anna - Hi sorry to bother you! um....may I ask one question? Are you Frank Gricus who have been to Taiwan? Frank - Yes, I did spend 8 months in Taipei from July 2001 to February 2002. I was training project managers for a US software company. The same company brought me to the UK where I have lived off and on since then. Email me at sno.problem@btinternet.com TOM THOMPSON - SIMILAR ITEMS ARE ON E BAY. iHAVE ONE SAME SIZE NO 386. IT IS THE WESTON SUPER MARE ALSO KNOWN AS WE- SU-MA WESUMA. DESCRIBED CORRECTLY BY AB Mr. M A Lemon - This a typical Wesuma pot as produced by Tom Lemon with scraffito design by Cyril Lemon. I am an avid collector of Tom's work and I have many Deco art pots from the Wesuma Pottery. The numbers on the underside always refer to the item shape. Fine pots from an under-rated but highly talented craftsman. |
Front Grant Waters : I am new to collecting pots and for my first purchase bought this largish vase (about 8 inches high) from a deceased estate in London. I thought the mark - AH I think - would be readily identifiable but despite checking various sources I have had no luck. |
Simon Hancox - Hello, I think this may well be a Raku pot made by Andrew Hill. Jen Shelley - Very like a Raku pot I have. Same mark, definately Andrew Hill Fliss - I have a couple of Andrew's pots. I'm pretty sure it's his. Pat - I go with Andrew Hill too. |
From William Hubicki of New York, who believes that this pot might be the work of Robert Washington, can you help William with identification? |
Paul Rice - In my opinion, certainly not by RJ Washington |
From : James Hazlewood : A stoneware jug, the mark is difficult to photograph, looks like AP with an additional line. |
James H - Mike - I now think that this jug was made at Askrigg Pottery by Andrew Hague. That was the name I thought when I first saw the mark but the work looks so different to his other work that I have seen and handled. But as always (and as if often the case), I could be wrong. James H - I have now had it confirmed in a very kind email from from Andrew Hauge that the jug was made by him.
Thanks as always Mike for your kind help with all these unidentified pots that you post for people. Its a great service and its so kind of you to give up your own time to help. I am sure that everyone appreciates it as much as I do.
Cheers
James gabrielle - i confirm that jug is from Andrew HAGHE |
From Lynne : Wax resist pot with a mark that looks like PS |
unknown - its skeggness pottery unknown - I think it may be Penny Simpson, Moretonhampstead, Devon. Bry - Yep, definitely Skegness Pottery. Went out of business about 1983 if I remember correctly. Mark Ladlow - I worked at Skegness pottery till 1982,Decoration called Bisque, tin glaze over wax resist with crocus martus painted over, probally made by Paul Tolliday |
From Mark Morris : A press moulded slipware dishn with an unusual mark, does anyone recognise it? |
Martin - Looks like a Dieter Kunzemann. Natalie - Hi Mark, I have a lidded casserole and it has exactly the same mark on it and uses the same combed pattern and glaze. Been trying to find out who too. Dieter's mark looks different to this though...I was wondering if perhaps Dorothy Kemp? Let me know if you find anything out! Dave - Definately Kunzemann
Miles - Agree with you Dave, D Kunzemann james brooke - i think not dieter kunzemann. wrong mark and the clay is too dark.I have known him for years. Anne Edwards - Has anyone seen DK pottery with small birds on a fence - the reverse has his stamp but I cant find any other examples |
From Moira Willis - A jug with a ship's decanter style. |
MOIRA WILLIS - HAS THE REMAINS OF A WORD ON BASE I.E. WALL COULD THAT BE CORNWALL? |
From Neil Bottomley, bowl, 8 inches in diameter, impressed markings, marked with a symbol which may be the initials OT. Owen Thorpe? |
mike - Try Gerald/Gotlind Weigel Neil - Still keep looking - not weigel checked with Gotlind herself. Thanks anyway Mary - I have a pot that I think is from Owen Thorpe. The OT is within a square (with rounded corners) stamp. It also has a CP monogram next to it, within a similar stamp. NEIL - HI MARY, YOURS IS 100% OWEN THORPE BUT I'M SURE MINE ISN'T. I NOW BELEIVE IT TO BE SCANDINAVIAN CAN ANY ONE HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP PLEASES |
From Jennie Sargent, planter with PM mark. Powdermills Pottery ? Jennie has a mug with the same design. |
Teresa Bettridge - I think this is the monogram of Mike Pratt - sorry, no other info. Joss - This isn't a Powdermills pottery pot - Nic collins when he was here had a similar way of wrapping a P and M together as his mark, however, he NEVER decorated with trees. James & Sam - I'm sorry that it doesn't help identify the item, but i also have an item by the same potter. It's very similar pattern but a different design. I'm happy to provide photos if required. I don't recall where it was purchased but the Mrs probably will. I also agree that I don't think its a powdermills pottery pot. James & Sam - I've just seen a similar design for sale on Ebay, could it be made at Boscastle Pottery, Devon. They certainly look like they use the same process to decorate thier pottery. liz - we visited boscastle recently and the potter said he was the only person to produce the tree effect Mandi - I have had pottery like this and it was definately Boscastle and I think maybe Mocha ware or similar.
Mandi dave and jackie - Yes, this is most definately from Boscastle Pottery, we have a frew of these piece and find them quite hard to get hold of. It is the unique style of fine airbrushed branchwork that caught our eye originally. Nice piece. wiil - hi it isnt airbrush ed it is a method of decorating using something strange like tobacco that makes the glaze crawl in treelike forms, willm update after a little research and boscastle rings a bell will - http://www.cornishceramics.com/pcamelot.htm Oliver - This doesn`t look too much like the Boscastle work where the mocha effect usually appears done direct onto clay rather than into white glaze - the initials would surely fit the Mocha Pottery at Cinderford better - see www.mochapottery.co.uk Jocelyn - I think it's by Mike Pollard of Pollard Pottery. Mike often incised little open V shapes on the blue parts to look like seagulls, does this have any? liam - Deff looks like Pollard's Pottery. But don't remember Mike having the MP monogram in his works.i could be wrong
called mochaware, some had the V birds. It might have been brought from there as it was sold at different places over the country over the years he did it. No tobacoo in the glaze unless it fell out his pipe. the treelike forms were done by holding the pot upside down and it bled down like that.
(grandson) Lin - I have been collecting for many years and this is not Camelot Pottery. Here is a link;

From Rodolfo Frizzera : A handled vase |
Blake Awbrey - Dear Rodolfo, I believe your vase was made circa 1930 by the Carstens factory located in Georgenthal, Germany. Unfortunately, finding resources for the factory for this time period are difficult here in the U.S. It is my hope that someone in Germany and/or Europe will be able to help with further information.
Yours, Blake Rodolfo - Blake, Thank you for your kindly answer and information. LINDY - HI RODOLFO, TRY THIS BRILLANT WEB SITE FOR GERMAN POTTERY. www.ginforsodditiques.com IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE MARK EMAIL HIM. REGARDS LINDY Michael Kempf - Hi Rodolfo!
You will find some information too in our pottery and glass forum:

From Rob Foster - This shallow dish about 7 inches wide and 1 3/4 inches deep has an interesting backstamp that so far I have not cracked. Looks like PT with an additional squiggle. |
rjh_63 - Hard to see mark, but if it has what looks like an M in between the P & the T (with or without a circular mark over it all) - probably Pauline Thompson, Ginge Brook Pottery, Berkshire. (page 615 of Godden's) Rob Foster - Many thanks rjh_63 for info. It looks like the second of the two marks in Godden's. |
From Andrew - A wheelthrown jug measuring 6 incles tall, tan slip to outside and yellow slip inside. Lead glazed with extensive crazing |
paul berman - Portuguese: peasant tourist ware |
From Trevor : An impressive tenmoku bottle, 16.75 inches tall, no visible mark. Bought by auction in a lot that also included a David Leach and a Janet Leach. |
Janet - Hi, This looks very much in the style of Joanna Wason, who worked alongside Janet Leach at the Leach pottery before it's closure for refurbishment, she now pots from home. Fliss - I think the previous correspondent may be right. Check out www.studio-pots.com/JoannaWason. See what you think. Trevor - Hi thanks for your comments. I contacted Jason Wason who advised me it wasn't made by Joanna Wason nick - just a thought...judging from the (apparently) heavy glaze - have you thought Trevor Corser? sometimes it is possible to discern a mark if you hold to the light at just the right angle |
From Trevor : An unusual shaped bowl with a clear wm(?) mark, the bowl is 114mm in diameter. |
Sam - Mark looks very much like William Marshall, Leach Pottery, Cornwall Tricia - I don't think this is William Marshall. Pat - I'd say not William Marshall. Robbin - William Marshall? Not likely. Way too fluid. |

Stoneware cider flagon on plinth, no makers mark |
Mike - I am told that this is likely to be by Andrew Holden who sadly was killed in a car accident some time ago. Chris - Andrew was a close friend of mine and I have one of his cider jars which is much bigger and mid brown in colour. I have not seen any of Andrew's pottery in this grey colour. either. |
