Edward Hughes died in a climbing accident in 2006. Although he lived in the Lake District most of his work was exhibited and sold in Japan, consequently he is little known in the UK and has been described as studio pottery's best kept secret. The MMU retrospective charts Edward's career from his student days at the Bath Academy of Art, through his time in Japan to later years in the Lake District. There are some great pots including huge chargers and caskets which demonstrate Edward's complete mastery of the potter's art. The beautiful glaze effects on his chapel boxes are wonderful.

I would like to congratulate Alex McErlain and Stephanie Boydell at the MMU for encapsulating Edward's life and work in a truly memorable exhibition. If you only visit onbe exhibition a year please make it this one, you will not be disappointed!
