Early in the firing of the bottle kiln

Over the weekend Karin and her husband built, fired and dismantled one of her fascinating bottle kilns - a bottle shaped kiln made from sandy soil and wine bottles. The objective was to fire to a temperature that allows the necks of the bottles partially melt and drip down under gravity whilst the kiln stays structurally intact. The highlight of Saturday evening was the glow through the bottles as the kiln was fired. After the kiln had cooled down on Sunday visitors saw that the firing had been a success and had the opportunity to purchase one of the partially melted penguin shaped bottles.
