This wonderful book was produced to accompany the major retrospective
exhibition of Bernard Leach's work held at the Victoria and Albert
Museum in London in 1977.
Introductory chapters about Leach and his life are followed by
selections from Leach's writings where he discusses his early
life in Japan followed by his time at St.Ives in Cornwall.
A set of tributes by Soetsu Yanagi, Michael Cardew and Shoji
Hamada complete the text.
The book is comprehensively illustrated with photographs of Leach
and his pots most of which are full page.
This is my favourite Bernard Leach book. It is only for sale
because on a recent visit to the book town Hay-on-Wye I purchased
a copy bearing the library mark of Roy Strong. At the time of
the exhibition, Roy was the Director of the Victoria and Albert
Museum where the exhibition was held.
This is the American edition, which as far as I can see is exactly
the same as the English edition published by Faber and Faber. |
